A Student Practicum is about commitment, and it needs to come from the host company as well as the student. Although practicum opportunities with airline & airport may be seasonal, Westjet has been a great host organization for our students. We would like to share some information with you about Westjet and an upcoming practicum opportunity for the busy winter vacation season in Vancouver.
Westjet is the second largest Canadian Airline and a low-cost carrier that offers air services to 87 destinations in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Westjet operates on average 425 flights and carries over 45,000 passengers per day. Founded in 1996, one of Westjet’s greatest strengths is its’ great guest service (aka customer service). The entire corporate culture at Westjet is built on caring for their guests by providing a great guest experience.
Westjet is often recognized for excellent service and has been regularly chosen as Canada’s preferred airline, and has also received many other awards including ‘best flight attendants’ and ‘best employers in Canada’. With all these awards, and not to mention our own individual great travel experiences and feedback from previous students who completed their Student Practicum with Westjet, we imagine that it is a great place to gain experience.
We have asked one of their recruitment team a few questions about Westjet to get an inside opinion and wanted to share this with you.
1. Compared to other airlines in North America, Westjet is a fairly young airline. What are some of the things that makes Westjet unique, and keeps it strong in a competitive market?
WestJet believes in taking care of its’ people so that they can take care of our guests who in turn take care of our business. We believe in the motto, “we succeed because I care”. At WestJet we are all owners and we strive everyday to give our guests the most remarkable experience when they fly with us!
2. What is the typical volume of travelers in busy months? Is there a particular destination that regularly gets high travel numbers?
We typically see our domestic side very busy in the summer months and then our international and transborder areas pick up in the colder winter months. Popular sun spots like Vegas and Hawaii are always very busy.
3. What are some of the most popular or high demand positions (from young people)?
Flight Attendant is very popular. As well as our Airport positions like Customer Service Agent and Guest Service Ambassador.
4. What are one or two positions that Westjet sees demand or a need for staff but the public isn’t always aware of?
We are very fortunate to have a wonderful and talented recruiting team so I believe we have the right people in the right positions. I will say, however, that when you say you work at WestJet (I’m sure this is the same for many airlines) people always assume you are a pilot or flight attendant. I am constantly saying “no no not flying anywhere today, I work at the airport.” Haha
5. What are the basic skills and experiences that large airline operation look for?
At WestJet we are always looking for great people who can show they care and who go above and beyond. Having customer service experience is always a plus and sometimes we are even lucky enough to have great people come from other airlines or travel agencies who have used the same reservations system or are familiar with the airport etc. This is not a requirement though.
6. How often does Westjet recruit and how is it promoted?
WestJet recruits based on flights and load factor. Typically we hire for the peak seasons of Summer and Winter. Most of our hiring is done through our YYC (Calgary) recruiting team. Jobs that are open for external applicants are posted on our website. We do not accept resumes at individual bases.
